You need to know that there are NO federal regulations governing home inspectors.

Yep, you read that right.

Laws for home inspectors vary by the state. Each state should have their own standards of certification for home inspectors, yet some don't even have these. (Missouri & Kansas included.) That's why you have a big job when it comes to choosing your home inspector.

We love it when buyers call to interview us to check our credentials and certifications. If you're interviewing home inspectors, a few important things to ask include:

  • Certifications held by the inspector

  • Associations the inspector belongs to (American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) members have membership requirements that include minimum levels of experience, training and codes of ethics.)
  • State-level associations

 

Once you've asked about their credentials, then visit the website to learn more and get sample inspection reports, etc.
